Scope creep is the gradual, informal expansion of a project's work beyond what was originally agreed, usually without a matching change to price or timeline.

What it means in practice

Scope creep rarely arrives as one big ask, it's a string of small "while you're at it" requests that each sound reasonable on their own: one more page, a small tweak to the checkout, "can we just also…". None of them go through a proper change request, so none of them get priced, and the job quietly grows past what was quoted. It's most likely where the original scope of work was vague, or where there's no easy way for the client to add something as a priced, structured extra rather than an off-the-cuff favour.

The fix isn't refusing every small ask, it's giving extras a clear, low-friction route: priced optional items the client can add, or a lightweight change request for anything genuinely new, so "just one more thing" becomes a line item instead of unpaid work.

Example

A studio scopes a website build with a fixed set of pages. Mid-project, the client asks for "one more landing page" three separate times. Each request is small; together they add a week of unpaid work the original quote never covered.
